High profile Galwegians are tackling the challenge of living ‘plastic free’ for the week commencing February 5 as part of Plastic Free Week in Galway City. Participants include Mayor of Galway City Pearce Flannery; Jake Heenan, Flanker for Connacht Rugby; JP McMahon, of Michelin-star restaurant Aniar; Hannah Kiely, Chief Executive of Galway2020; Dr Peter Heffernan, Chief Executive of the Marine Institute; and a number of well-known faces from the cast of Ros na Rún, among others.

Galway businesses and organisations were well represented at the press event in the Eyre Square Centre on Monday when Mayor Pearce Flannery launched Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh 2018. The Gradam is now officially open for nominations until Monday February 23.

The Galway City Council has secured funding for a major flood defence project for the city. Galway City Council and NUI Galway have signed an agreement to formalise joint plans for collaboration and development in Galway city. The signing of the “Poitiers Declaration” means NUI Galway is the latest of the Coimbra Group of long-established, multidisciplinary research European universities to agree cooperation initiatives within their local socio-economic environment.
